Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department, Delivers Lecture at the International Research Centre for Nuclear Materials Science, Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University

On April 11, 2019, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Educational Seminar for Radiation Workers was held by the International Research Center for Nuclear Materials Science (IRC) of the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) of Tohoku University, located in Oarai-machi, Ibaraki Prefecture. As part of the seminar, Mr. Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department at the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), delivered a lecture titled “Development of Technology for Fuel Debris Retrieval Conducted by IRID.”

Mr. Takamori’s lecture presented an overview of IRID, the status of investigation inside the primary containment vessel (PCV) focusing on robots developed by IRID, research and development (R&D) related to fuel debris retrieval, and concepts of safety management.

The IRC is an all-Japan collaborative usage facility for research on radioactive isotope and nuclear fuel. It also serves as a center of research for nuclear materials, contributing to numerous studies. Concerning the purpose of the IRC, the lecture meeting was held as part of the FY 2019 Educational Seminar for Radiation Workers after a mandatory course, and it attracted approximately 40 people.

IRID continues to provide opportunities for introducing the status of R&D for the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station for people across various fields.
