Booth Display at Robot Festa Fukushima 2018: Research and Development for the Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and Introduction of Submersible Robot

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) and a member company, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba Energy Systems) had display booths at the Robot Festa Fukushima 2018 held from November 22–23, 2018.
Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department, delivered a lecture on the investigation and retrieval of fuel debris using robots entitled “Status of research and development (R&D) being conducted by IRID” during the Advanced Robotics Technology Seminar held at the main stage on November 22, 2018.
This marks the fourth year of Robot Festa, which was held for two days. The Aerospace Festa was held simultaneously similar to last year. The Robot Festa attracted approximately 9,600 people (according to the organizer) for two days, including many dedicated fans and families. Many visitors dropped by IRID booth.
The IRID booth featured panel exhibitions on the status of R&D being conducted by IRID toward the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS). In addition, a submersible robot (known as mini-mambo robot) was exhibited and demonstrated inside a water tank. The robot was developed by Toshiba Energy Systems to investigate the inside of Unit 3. Visitors showed keen interest, especially on the submersible robot.
Furthermore, IRID distributed the publication “Important Stories on Decommissioning” issued by the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy to promote understanding of the current status of decommissioning.
