Atomic Energy Society of Japan Symposium / Nuclear Decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Stations: Key Issues and Perspectives , A Lecture by Vice President Dr. Tamio Arai
(March 18, 2018)

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) has organized lectures on the research and development of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Stations (NPS) at various events. As part of our efforts, IRID organized a lecture at the Atomic Energy Society of Japan Symposium.

The Atomic Energy Society of Japan has formed a committee for the nuclear decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS to resolve the issues concerning nuclear decommissioning through full cooperation with other academic associations.

As seven years have passed since the nuclear accident, the symposium discussed key issues involving the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS. Additionally, we were acquainted with the opinions that can enable us to find a wide variety of solutions that can be utilized in future nuclear decommissioning activities.

As part of the symposium, Dr. Arai, the vice president of IRID, delivered a lecture titled “Lecture 4: Expectations to Robotic Technology.” In the lecture, Dr. Arai expounded the achievements and challenges in introducing industrial robots to the public, and concluded that the nuclear decommissioning is a long-term project that may last another generation and that IRID is seeking understanding for on-site decommissioning.

IRID is promoting positive cooperation with universities and research institutes through lectures and special courses on demand.
