Visit to the U.S. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)
(January 29-30, 2018)

IRID has been developing a technology for a canister by which fuel debris is safely collected, transferred, and stored after retrieval in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Therefore, IRID has enhanced its efforts towards cooperation with international nuclear organizations and specialists.

As part of IRID’s project "Development of collection, transfer and storage for fuel debris", IRID members visited the U.S. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for a meeting on "Study of the Impact of the α-ray on the Hydrogen Generation Evaluation."

O Visit to:
PNNL, Richland, Washington, the U.S

O Achievements:
When fuel debris is stored in a canister, hydrogen gas would be generated from the water inside the canister due to radiolysis. For the actual use of a canister, it is necessary to develop the technology for estimating the amount of hydrogen generated in advance, as well as its monitoring. IRID is conducting a project in Japan to verify various technical issues. In addition, project members obtained valuable knowledge about hydrogen generation behavior, such as the impact of the α-ray (including hydrogen generation model), through discussions with the U.S. research institute engineers.
