Booth Display at “Robot Festa Fukushima 2017”
(22-23 November 2017),
R&D for the Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS, and Introduction of Robots Developed by four IRID Member Companies

IRID and member companies; Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy (Hitachi GE), Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba Energy Systems), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and ATOX, displayed booths at “Robot Festa Fukushima 2017” held on 22-23 November 2017.

In addition, Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department, gave a lecture on investigations and retrieval of fuel debris using robots, titled “Status of research and development (R&D) conducted by IRID”, at the Advanced Robotics Seminar, which was held at the main stage on 22 November 2017.

The Robot Festa was held over two days this time, which is the third time since its foundation. Many dedicated fans and families visited the Robot Festa and Aerospace Festa that were held simultaneously. The Festa attracted about 8,400 people (according to the organizer), and many visitors viewed the IRID booth.

The IRID booth featured panel exhibitions on the status of R&D being conducted by IRID toward the decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS). In addition, five robots for investigation and decontamination were exhibited and demonstrated in the booth (some were demonstrated only statically), which was located near the entrance, attracting high interest among visitors.

<Robots exhibited by IRID>

  • 1 Hitachi GE: Exhibition and demonstration of PMORPHⅠ(a robot developed to investigate in narrow spaces with high accessibility as well as stable travelling performance)
  • 2 Toshiba Energy Systems: Exhibition and video viewing of an underwater swimming robot (It entered inside the Fukushima Daiichi NPS primary containment vessel (PCV) for the first time. It is a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) under high radiation environment)
  • 3 MHI: Exhibition and demonstration of MHI-MEISTeRⅡ (Remotely controlled robot, which is developed to flexibly perform with two arms at disasters)
  • 4 ATOX: Exhibition and demonstration of a small remotely operated debris collecting device (a self-operating device to collect debris and dust scattered on the floor of the reactor buildings), a dual-arm robot for decommissioning activities (a robot for decommissioning activities with two strong arms and high maintenance performance)

IRID is committed to delivering easy-to-understand R&D information including demonstrations and exhibition displays for the future.
