Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department, Participated in the International Conference and Delivered a Lecture [OECD/NEA SAREF Joint Workshop on the Fukushima Daiichi Decommissioning/PreADES Project]
(January 24 and 28, 2019)

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)/the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the Senior Expert Group on Safety Research Opportunities Post-Fukushima (SAREF) Joint Workshop on the Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning and the Preparatory Study on Analysis of Fuel Debris (PreADES) Project was held in Paris, France, between January 24 and 29, 2019.

Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department of the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), delivered a lecture on “Overview of IRID research and development (R&D) including R&D for fuel debris retrieval technologies” at the workshop. At the PreADES Project meeting, Mr. Okuzumi mainly described concepts of safety functions during the retrieval of fuel debris (cooling, confinement, and prevention of fire and hydrogen explosion). These projects are proposed and led by the Japanese government, the Japan Atomic Energy Association (JAEA), a member of IRID, and various organizations for the support and study on the strategies for decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Over fifty researchers who have been involved in research of severe accidents in various countries intensely listened to the lectures.

IRID continues to promote positive cooperation with the international society through international organizations such as the OECD/NEA.
