The 37th Academic Seminar of Robotics Society of Japan (September 3–7,2019):
Winning the 11th Robot Utilization Award for Social Contribution and Attending the Open Forum

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) won the 11th Robot Utilization Award for Social Contribution at the 37th Academic Seminar organized by the Robotic Society of Japan, which was held during September 3–7, 2019. The commended robots were: an investigation device for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, a submersible robot for investigating inside the primary containment vessel in Unit 3, and an investigation device with a pan-tilt camera mechanism used in Unit 2.

This award aims at encouraging the widespread use of robots to realize “living in a robot society,” and is given to individuals and organizations that contribute to changing the society.

To determine a fuel-debris-retrieval policy for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, three organizations, namely, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc, and IRID, were honored for contributing towards future-technology development, accumulating the know-how required to develop remote-operated investigation devices, and utilizing robots that will be required for severe disaster sites. Mr. Kenji Matsuzaki of Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation attended the award ceremony as a representative of the three organizations.

The open-forum session “Cooperation with the Atomic Energy Society of Japan and Challenges for Nuclear Decommissioning Part 5” was held on September 3, 2019. In the session, Mr. Kenro Takamori, the General Manager of IRID’s R&D Strategy Planning Department, delivered a lecture.

It is essential to promote the development of robotic technology that enables remote operations during decommissioning tasks in high-radiation environments and to emphasize information sharing among engineers engaged in robot development. In addition, the forum encouraged opinion sharing to understand the importance of extensive cooperation between two academic societies; the Robotics Society of Japan and the Atomic Energy Society of Japan.
