The 2nd Japanese Geotechnical Society Committee for Decommissioning; Lecture by Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department
(October 28, 2019)

The Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), Waseda University, and Chiba Institute of Technology have contributed to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) through the national program for environmental assessment of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, the development of the new geotechnical technology (utilized in retrieving fuel debris and in the decommissioning), and human resource cultivation. This program has been adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program: The Center of World Intelligence Project for Nuclear Science and Technology and Human Resource Development.

Furthermore, the JGS established the Study Committee for New Geotechnical Technology and Human Resource Cultivation towards the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS (the JGS Committee). The Committee has promoted technological development for nuclear decommissioning and advanced programs for sharing information.

The 2nd JGS Committee for the Decommissioning was held on October 28, 2019. During the committee, the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) provided a report on the decommissioning. Mr. Naoaki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of IRID’s R&D Strategy Planning Department, gave a lecture titled “Status of Technological Development for Decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) Conducted by IRID.” He introduced various devices used for the detailed investigation inside the primary containment vessel (PCV), which IRID is currently engaged in, and expounded on fuel debris retrieval technologies. The lecture attracted over fifty people who listened with keen interest and asked various questions.

The decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS is a long-term project that would take 30 to 40 years; therefore, it is important to collect knowledge and expertise, and cultivate young talents who can resolve major issues anticipated for the decommissioning projects. IRID is committed to promoting research and development to introduce larger numbers of people through various opportunities.

Date and time: 15:00-17:00, Monday, October 28th, 2019
