PreADES Project Meeting Held at OECD/NEA Headquarters in Paris, France: Lecture Presented by Mr. Tomozo Koyama, Senior Manager of the R&D Management Department

The Preparatory Study on Analysis of Fuel Debris Meeting, known as the PreADES Meeting, was held at the Headquarters of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development /the Nuclear Energy Agency, abbreviated as the OECD/NEA, in Paris, France, on February 12 and 13, 2020. At the meeting, Mr. Tomozo Koyama, Senior Manager of the R&D Management Department of the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), participated in a discussion on fuel debris analysis and also delivered a lecture titled “Transport of Fuel Debris Samples – Investigation on Type B Cask.” The lecture included a safety analysis (structural strength evaluation, thermal analysis, and evaluation of confinement, shielding, and criticality safety) required for the transport of fuel debris samples in the future using an existing B-type transport container. This project has been proposed and led by the Japanese government and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, which is one of the member organizations of IRID aimed to support the decommissioning strategies of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The lecture attracted approximately 50 people from various countries who are experts in safety research and engaged in active discussions.

After the meeting, the IRID members, including Mr. Koyama, visited the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) Cadarache, France. Furthermore, they visited the uranium testing facility at CEA Cadarache, where a molten core-concrete interaction test, known as the MCCI test, was performed. Then, they confirmed the test samples and discussed the future test to be performed.
