The Tohoku University Safety Seminar on Light Water Reactor (Nuclear Decommissioning Class): Lectured by Mr. Kenro Takamori (IRID) and Dr. Satoshi Okada (Hitachi-GE)
(September 29, 2020)

Tohoku University has established a program for human resource development towards nuclear decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) unit 1 to 4 and addressed the issues through the program since fiscal year (FY) 2014.

As a part of the program, an intensive course titled “FY 2020 Safety Seminar for Light Water Reactor (nuclear-decommissioning class)” was offered for three days and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) provided an online lecture in the intensive course. On September 29, 2020, Mr. Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the IRID R&D Strategy Planning Department, gave an online presentation titled “Current status and challenges of R&D for decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS”, which mainly focused on an overview of IRID, the status of fuel debris investigation, technological development and challenges for fuel debris retrieval, and safety design.

Furthermore, Dr. Satoshi Okada, Senior Engineer of the Nuclear Equipment Design Department, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, which is an IRID member organization, also provided an online lecture titled “Development of Robotic Technology for Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Station”, which covered the development of a decommissioning robot to be applied on site.

IRID is committed to promoting active cooperation with universities and research institutes through on-demand courses and lectures.
