(October 2019)

The Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), Waseda University, and Chiba Institute of Technology have contributed to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) through the national program for environmental assessment of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, the development of new geotechnical technology (utilized in retrieving fuel debris and in the decommissioning), and human resource cultivation. This program has been adopted by a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program: The Center of World Intelligence Project for Nuclear Science and Technology and Human Resource Development.

Furthermore, the JGS established the Study Committee for New Geotechnical Technology and Human Resource Cultivation Towards the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS (JGS Committee). The Committee has promoted technological development for the nuclear decommissioning and advanced programs for sharing the information.

As part of JGS activities, the October 2019 issue of the JGS Journal was published, and it features an article on decommissioning geotechnical engineering submitted by the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID). The article is titled Current Status of IRID’s Research and Development (R&D) for the Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS.
