A Lecture by Vice President Dr. Tamio Arai at the National Institute of Technology, Fukushima College [Overview of Decommissioning Robot]

The mid- and long-term roadmap towards the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) Units 1–4, describes the initiatives to “cultivate human resources and partner with universities and research organizations for mid- and long-term projects.” The National Institute of Technology, Fukushima College has supported “the Program for Fundamental Research and Human Resources Development towards the Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants”, which was the research and development (R&D) promotion program commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT).

In order to promote the program, the Fukushima College provided the “Overview of the Decommissioning Robot” course for third grade students in cooperation with the National Institute of Technology across Japan. As part of the program, Vice President Dr. Tamio Arai delivered a lecture entitled “Application of Robots at Fukushima Daiichi NPS.”

Dr. Arai introduced the robots implemented at the Fukushima NPS accident, updates on the investigations inside the reactor using robots including the challenges, the concepts of robot design, and expectations. A dedicated audience of eighty-three people attended the lecture.
