Small Workshop with Tokyo Institute of Technology (January 10, 2018)
The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) held a small workshop in cooperation with the Tokyo Institute of Technology at the “Forum for Nuclear Decommissioning Technology and Human Resource Development,”organized by the Tokyo Institute of Technology, on January 10, 2018. This was the second time that IRID held a workshop with the Tokyo Institute of Technology. It was attended by approximately 100 people, including IRID members, those in academia and industries, and teachers and students of the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
The workshop featured presentations on the “Current Status and Issues of Research and Development (R&D) towards Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS): Development of Technology for Fuel Debris Retrieval” by Naoki Okuzumi, Senior Manager of the R&D Planning Department, IRID, and “Study on Evaluation Methods of Actual Criticality Risks” by Dr. Yuichi Morimoto, Senior Engineer of the Nuclear Plant Engineering Department, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy. In addition, representatives from the Tokyo Institute of Technology outlined human resource development activities and fundamental studies being undertaken by the university, and Professor Ronald Ballinger from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) delivered a lecture about research activities on nuclear decommissioning in the United States. The Q&A session included discussions on research activities and opportunities to exchange opinions about how to cultivate human resources for the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS.
This activity provided a valuable opportunity to enhance cooperation with universities that are engaged in research on the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, and to promote communication among young researchers.
IRID continues to promote positive cooperation with universities.
Date and time: Wednesday, January 10, 2018, 9:00 – 17:30
Place: Ookayama Campus, Tokyo Institute of Technology
Purpose: In order to proceed with the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, a task that is expected to take over thirty years, and other R&D projects, it is essential to secure and develop human resources from a mid-and-long-term perspective. This workshop was intended to promote cooperation with universities and develop young talent through the exchange of opinions and information with the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which has undertaken the Program for Nuclear Decommissioning and Human Resources Development funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology (MEXT).
