Speech by Kenro Takamori, IRID General Manager, R&D Management Department at the 1st Conference for R&D Initiative on Nuclear Decommissioning Technology by the Next Generation (NDEC)(March 16, 2016)

Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the R&D Management Department at IRID, delivered a speech entitled ‘Current Status of Decommissioning Technology R&D at IRID’ at the 1st Conference for R&D Initiative on Nuclear Decommissioning Technology by the Next Generation (NDEC-1). In addition, Tadahiro Washiya, head of IRID member organization Japan Atomic Energy Association’s Fuel Debris Handling and Analysis Division gave a speech at the conference entitled ‘Current Status of Research into Characterization/Measurement of Fuel Debris’.

Research presentations were given by technical junior college, undergraduate, and postgraduate students involved in research related to reactor decommissioning such as robotics and measurement systems, fuel debris treatment and disposal, and evaluation of facility integrity. In addition, students displayed posters presenting their work and there was a panel exhibition by industry/academic bodies that participated in the conference. All IRID member organizations took part, and they had the opportunity to enhance communication with students who will be leaders of the next generation in the field.

The conference was targeted at young researchers engaged in research related to decommissioning, etc., providing them with a venue to present the results of their regular research and the opportunity to interact with others in the same generation. It was held in collaboration between seven institutions that have adopted the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology’s ‘Basic research of decommissioning/human resource development program’.
