The Safety Seminar on Light Water Reactors for Nuclear Decommissioning Organized by Tohoku University: Kenro Takamori, General Manager of R&D Strategy Planning Department, Delivers a Lecture.

Tohoku University has established the Program for Human Resource Development towards Nuclear Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) Unit 1 to 4 and has addressed the issues through the program since fiscal year (FY) 2014.
As part of the program, an intensive course for the FY 2019 Safety Seminar on Light Water Reactors for Nuclear Decommissioning was offered for four days and the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) was provided an opportunity to introduce its research and development (R&D). On September 19, 2019, Mr. Kenro Takamori, the General Manager of IRID R&D Strategy Planning Department, delivered a lecture titled “The Current Status and Challenges of R&D for Decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi NPS,” which was an overview of IRID, the status of investigations on fuel debris, technology development, issues for fuel debris retrieval, and safe design.
Furthermore, IRID member organizations also gave lectures to expound the development of decommissioning robots and robotic applications in nuclear decommissioning. Mr. Hirofumi Kinoshita, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd., spoke on “Development of Robotic Technology and the On-site Application for the Fukushima Daiichi NPS,” and Mr. Taiji Kobayashi, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation, addressed the “Development of Robotic Technology Related to Nuclear Decommissioning and the On-site Application”.
