The 6th International Advisory Meeting held at the IRID Head Office, December 4–6, 2018; Visit to the JAEA Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development and the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station on December 6, 2018

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) convened its 6th International Advisory Meeting on December 4–6, 2018. The international advisors are overseas experts who provide advice to the Board of Directors of the IRID.

At the meeting, IRID management members presented a progress report on IRID activities for the previous year. The International advisors evaluated IRID’s Design Review Meeting (IDR), safety concepts for fuel debris retrieval, and enhancement of communications and information releases. Furthermore, the advisors offered valuable advice on the establishment of a knowledge management system that includes lessons learned from failures, and the promotion of balanced research and development (R&D).

  • Mr. Lake H. Barrett (USA)
    Independent Consultant and former Site Director for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission [NRC] on the Three Mile Island accident
  • Mr. Luis E. Echávarri (Spain)
    Former Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and a member of the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG)
  • Professor Melanie Brownridge (UK)
    Head of Technology, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)

2.Overall Schedule

  • Tuesday, December 4, 2018 : Report on the updated status of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS), an overview of IRID’s activities, and progress on R&D projects.
  • Wednesday, December 5, 2018 : Comprehensive discussions, advice, and proposals on the IRID’s activities, provided by the international advisors.
  • Thursday, December 6, 2018 : Visit to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development, the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (TEPCO), the Decommissioning Archive Center, and Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

3.Advice and Proposals from International Advisors

The international advisors advised that we continue improving on efforts already at appreciably satisfactory levels.
