IRID Symposium 2021: Challenges for Fuel Debris Retrieval Ⅳ

The International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID) held the IRID Symposium 2021 to report on the achievements in technological developments related to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS), which is being conducted by IRID. The details of the symposium are as follows.

The IRID Symposium has been annually held since IRID was established and the its theme in 2021 was “Challenges for Fuel Debris Retrieval Ⅳ.” The symposium was intended to report on the results of research and development (R&D) undertaken by IRID, and to promote the cultivation of young researchers and engineers.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium in 2021 was held in a hybrid style that included a mix of both in-person and online attendees. Only a limited number of participants gathered at the symposium venue, whereas most participants joined a hybrid symposium.

The IRID Symposium 2021

The symposium included R&D presentations related to fuel debris retrieval for Fukushima Daiichi NPS. These were delivered by Mr. Kenro Takamori, General Manager of the R&D Strategy Planning Department, IRID; Mr. Fumihiro Hosoe, MHI, Ltd.; and Dr. Satoshi Okada, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd. Approximately 100 people attended the symposium venue (including press members) and 320 people had registered for the online symposium.

A site tour of Fukushima Daiichi NPS, Fukushima Robot Test Field, and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency Naraha Center for Remote Control Technology Development

On Thursday, December 9, 2021, IRID organized a site tour of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) Naraha Remote Technology Development Center (NARREC), and the Fukushima Robot Test Field (RTF) for students who gave presentations or exhibited posters at the IRID Symposium 2021. Every year, a site tour is arranged on the day after the symposium. This site tour also included RTF, which was located in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture.

The site tour aimed to promote a better understanding of R&D for nuclear decommissioning, and to provide an opportunity to visit Fukushima Daiichi NPS and the nuclear facilities to be utilized for further research activities by those students who wish to work on decommissioning in their future.
